Protect Your Family Against Fraud This Holiday Season

Have you ever gotten a phone call from the electric company claiming that they will disconnect your service for unpaid bills? Perhaps it was an email that appears to be from your cable provider saying your account has been compromised or a text message asking you to click a link. These are just a few examples of many scam communications that we’ve all experienced.
We need to be on high alert to fraud and scams every day, especially during the holiday season. While you’re shopping for the perfect holiday gifts online and in stores, here are some simple tips to avoid falling victim to fraud.
Review your transaction history
Track your monthly purchases, and don’t forget to check them twice! Look out for unauthorized transactions or any discrepancies in your account statements. Consistently monitoring your account in online banking and the Jovia mobile app can alert you to any suspicious activity. Sign up for paperless statements to view them online. Learn more in our advice article, Fighting Debit Card Fraud
Go mobile
Jovia debit and credit cards work with Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay. When you add your debit and credit cards to your digital wallets, your cards are secure whether you shop online or in stores.
Ask yourself: Is this site legit?
Be aware of scams when purchasing items online or even donating to charities. Did you find an online deal offering you a round-trip flight to Paris for $100? Is the merchant asking for personal information unrelated to the transaction? Ensure you are purchasing from legitimate and secure sites, and make sure you have the most updated anti-virus software just in case. And before entering your credit card information, always check for the https:// URL to ensure the checkout page is secure. Learn more in our advice article, Personal Cybersecurity Tips.
Set account alerts
Activate debit and credit card alerts with Card Controls. Setting alerts can help you better manage your account and stay in the know about any unusual transactions. Card Controls give you peace of mind that no one else is accessing your accounts. You choose when and how you want to be alerted. Want to get a text for any transaction over $50? Want to receive an email if a purchase is made at Best Buy? You can do that!
Protect your PIN
Be aware of your surroundings when using your credit and debit cards in public. Shield the keypad anytime you enter your PIN while shopping or using an ATM. Remember, don’t share your PIN with anyone.
Watch out for “compromised account” scams
Scammers take advantage of holiday shoppers by claiming to be from financial institutions, asking for personal information so they can “make sure your account or information isn’t compromised.”  In reality, giving these scammers any of your personal information could cause a compromise to your account. If anyone contacts you directly asking for your information over the phone, by email, or social media, they are likely not authorized to do so. Be cautious. Do not respond and proactively reach out to your financial institution to confirm if the call or message you received was legitimate.
Check your credit reports
Prevent identity theft by checking your credit reports, especially during high-volume shopping periods. Don’t wait before it’s too late to identify any suspicious activity. Contact any of the three major credit bureaus (Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian) or sign up for a credit monitoring service like FraudScout™ through Jovia.
